Network & Connectivity Requirements

⚠️ Critical Note:

  • Overlooking these steps will result in poor or no data collection.
  • Communicate with your building's IT / OT team or email us to support you if you have questions.

🌐 Network Requirements

DHCP Enabled

The Edge Node supports DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), this means it is configured to automatically receive an IP address from your building’s network, so manual configuration is not required.

However, If your IT team requires a static IP address, you can assign it at the time of creating a collector in the Onboard App.‍

‍Outbound Internet Access

TCP Port 443 Outbound

Outbound access over TCP port 443 must be permitted for secure HTTPS communication with Onboard’s cloud services via the following endpoints:

Required:

  • api.onboarddata.io
  • *.s3.amazonaws.com
    • onboard-ubuntu.s3.amazonaws.com
    • ob-dropbox.s3.amazonaws.com
  • s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com
  • s3.dualstack.us-east-1.amazonaws.com
  • ssm.us-east-1.amazonaws.com
  • ssm.us-east-1.api.aws
  • logs.us-east-1.amazonaws.com
  • logs.us-east-1.api.aws
  • monitoring.us-east-1.amazonaws.com
  • monitoring.us-east-1.api.aws

Optional:

  • security.ubuntu.com
    • Used for retrieving cutting edge security updates for the Edge Node. If this is not allowed, the system will still work, but security updates may be delayed.
UDP Port 1501 Outbound (Optional – Debugging Only)

This is optional and only required if the Onboard team needs to troubleshoot the Edge Node.

In that case, the Edge Node must be granted outbound access over UDP port 1501. This allows Onboard’s WireGuard (VPN) service to establish a secure connection to the Edge Node for remote troubleshooting. This secure tunnel can only be created when outbound UDP 1501 is allowed.

When enabled, please ensure your network allows outbound connections to the following addresses:

  • wg.onboarddata.io (DNS resolution must be function for this domain)
  • 3.87.213.243
  • 18.205.92.121

If this port is not open, data collection will still continue to function normally.

📳 Connectivity Requirements

Ensure that all connected building systems are accessible to the Edge Software for data collection

Bacnet

To collect data from BACnet systems, the following conditions must be met:

  • Ensure BACnet Devices Are Discoverable: Confirm that all BACnet devices and their points are discoverable on your building's network. This can typically be verified through the BAS front-end or by your building’s controls technician.
  • Install Edge Software on the Same Subnet: The Edge Software must be installed on the same IP subnet as your BACnet devices.

Modbus

Onboard supports Modbus data collection using TCP/IP. Ensure the following:

  • Device Access Over IP: Confirm that all Modbus devices will be accessible by the Edge Software over the network.
  • Supported Devices and Templates: We have pre-defined templates and automation that map Modbus devices to equipment types and each register to a point type with its corresponding unit of measurement. We currently support the following Schneider Electric Energy Meters:
    • PM600
    • PM800
    • PM5000
    • CM500

If you do not find a Modbus template for your device, please request a new template in our online community by providing the Vendor Name and Model Name.
