Using the Equipment Tab

Modeling equipment involves applying consistent labels called equipment types to each piece of equipment in your building and selecting relevant points that make up that equipment. An example of an equipment type is HVAC/VAV. You can find the complete list of Equipment Types on our Data Model page.

The Equipment Tab simplifies the process of modeling the equipment in your building. Staging automatically creates a preset of equipment for each device, inheriting its name from the device ID. Onboard’s AI then suggests equipment type labels and un-assigns irrelevant points, so most of the modeling work is done for you.

Review and adjust the presets directly on the Equipment Tab, or create virtual equipment of your own. See Onboard's Data Model for how equipment relates to devices and points.

🧰 Create & Rename Equipment

  • Create: Use the Create Equipment button in the top menu to add new virtual equipment to your building model
  • Rename: Click on any row under the equipment name column to rename it

🏷️ Edit Equipment Types

  • To change the equipment type for a single equipment, click on the Equip Type label for the corresponding equipment, or
  • To change the equipment type for multiple equipment, select the equipment first and then use the Update Equipment Type button in the top menu
  • In the Editor Box, select the correct Equipment Type from the dropdown menu.
    • The top predictions from Onboard’s AI are displayed, with confidence scores for each
    • Once you select an equipment type, it will be automatically applied to your selected equipment

✅ Publish Data

Publishing makes your modeled equipment and points live, so they start collecting time-series data. You can publish all at once or incrementally as you finish reviewing the building model.

  1. Select the equipment you wish to publish and click the Publish button in the top menu
  2. Click Confirm. The selected equipment and their points are now live and ready to collect time-series data

🔗 Manage Points & Relationships

Click on an equipment row to expand it and access its sub-tabs:

Points

View and manage the points assigned to an equipment.

  • Check or uncheck the points you want to assign or un-assign
  • Click Apply and your selection will be saved
  • You can assign points from multiple devices to an equipment
  • Use the filters in the sub-tab to quickly find the point you are looking for
Assigning Points

FEEDS

FEEDS is used to assign a relationship indicating that the equipment provides media (air, water, gas, etc) to the target entity (equipment or location).

Note: To assign a FEEDS relationship, the equipment must be published first.

Equipment
  • Manage which equipment receive media from this equipment, for example an AHU supplying air to downstream VAVs
  • Predictions from Onboard’s AI are displayed under the FEEDS Confidence column
  • Select the published equipment you want to assign
  • Click Apply and your selection will be saved
Applying a FEEDS Equipment
Locations
  • Assign spaces supplied with media by this equipment
  • You can select from a list of locations created in the Locations Tab
  • Here, you can only assign which location is fed by this equipment
  • To learn how to create a location and assign equipment contained by it, see Locations tab

⚡ Bulk Actions

Select multiple equipment using the checkboxes on the table. From here you can apply changes to every selected equipment at once, using the action buttons in the top menu, instead of editing each one individually.

  • Update Equipment Type: Update the label for multiple equipment at once
  • Reset to Last Published: Revert selected equipment to their last published state, including point assignments, equipment type, and equipment name
  • Prune Unpublished Points: Remove all unpublished point assignments from selected equipment in one click
  • Unpublish: Remove selected equipment and all their points from the live building. The equipment stays on Staging and retains its point assignments. For the full unpublish workflow, see Publish-Unpublish Workflow.
  • Delete: Remove selected equipment permanently. Deleting equipment does not affect the points assigned to it, it simply un-assigns the points

🚩 Flags

Validation Flags

  • If an equipment has a validation issue, the Flags column will display an error flag
  • Common causes include a missing equipment type label, or points within the equipment that have unresolved validation errors
  • Hover over the flag to see a description of the issue
  • If the issue is related to invalid points, switch to the Points Tab to address the specific point
  • Use action buttons to correct equipment type labels for multiple equipment at once, or edit individual equipment as needed
  • Once corrected, the flag automatically disappears for the corresponding equipment

Other Flags

  • Published Flag: Whether the equipment is published or not
  • Diff Flag: Whether the staged version of the equipment differs from its published version. This flag appears when you make a change to equipment type, equipment name, or assign a new point to the equipment
